In countries that are controlling the pandemic by an order of magnitude better than Massachusetts, i.e. Germany and Denmark which have 10 deaths per 100 K population, while Mass has 100/100 K, protect frontline workers like grocery store staff and hospital environmental services, equally as medical workers. Hence it is not the nature of the work, but the effort for protection, that puts Black and Latino Bostonians at risk of COVID at work. (I agree with your other points!)

Deb- there are a variety of metrics used. Most commonly overcrowding is defined as >1 people/room of the house, which is the metric used in overcrowding slide

Julia- great point! We clearly could be doing much more in this regard. We also saw similar results in NYC where rates of infection and death among MTA workers was exceptionally high at the start of the pandemic, and came down somewhat after they began having improved PPE. We certainly think of PPE in the medical setting, and I couldn’t agree more that having appropriate PPE for ALL frontline workers is exceptionally important

@Julia this is an excellent point and I also highlights the structural ways that we prioritize certain essential workers over others and may be subject to bias within our policies/practices on a local and national level.

Comment: with regards to further possible mechanism linking population risk factors to increased COVID-morbidity and mortality in minorities, data from Germany suggests that superspread/cluster outbreaks result in more symptomatic infections suggesting that viral dose per se (which is a problem in overcrowded housing) is a problem in addition to the disproportionate actual infections and existing disparate baseline health (diabetes, obesity etc).

Thank you Milad that’s an important point to note. We focused more on overcrowding in the home, but overcrowding at the neighborhood level is certainly another influential factor, and one that would be especially important when thinking about cluster outbreaks

Thankfully, race/ethnicity data in testing was included in the bill recently passed by the MA legislature
